Diazepam 10mg

Diazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine group of drugs. It possesses the actions of benzodiazepines like anxiolysis, muscle relaxation, sedation, hypnosis, anticonvulsant action and amnesia.

Diazepam being a benzodiazepine, binds to a specific site in the GABA A receptor thereby activating the GABA. Thus the GABA is activated and in turn it suppresses the central nervous system.

Diazepam can be administered in the following forms: orally as tablets or capsules, parenterally either intramuscularly or intravenously, and as suppositories.

The dosage of Diazepam is 2-10 mg per day. It should be given as divided dose. The drug Diazepam10 mg is used to treat anxiety, panic attacks, agitation, alcohol, drug and benzodiazepine withdrawal, short term treatment of insomnia, pre operative sedation and before minor procedures like endoscopy to alleviate anxiety and bring about amnesia, as a palliative treatment in stiff person syndrome, in tetanus, for treating status epilepticus and as a prophylactic treatment in oxygen toxicity.

It is also used to treat epilepsy in dogs and cats. Diazepam is used in the short term treatment of epilepsy in the dogs and in long term treatment of epilepsy in cats.

The contraindications of Diazepam10 mg are acute narrow angle glaucoma, ataxia, end stage renal disease, hepatic failure, sleep apnea, severe depression, breast feeding, pregnancy coma and shock, hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines.

If Diazepam is used in pregnancy especially during the third trimester, it will result in the benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome in the baby. The neonate will be hypotonic; will have weak suckling reflex, cyanosis and apnea. It may also result in Floppy infant syndrome.
